Origami Octahedron

In this assignment we will use Origami to build an octahedron. The resulting shape will be an origami skeleton, in that the finished figure will not show the outer surface of the octahedron.

To start, take six pieces of Origami paper, two each of three different colors. Make vertical and horizontal folds that fold the square in half, and also make the two diagonal folds. However, flip the paper over before you make the diagonal folds. This will help to fold the paper later.

Next, fold the paper by moving two vertices together, and the other two together to get a star-like shape.

Repeat this with all six pieces. You will build an octahedron by putting linking these star-like shapes together. Notice that each has four pockets. Label your colors one, two and three. Place a star of color two into a pocket of color one. Next, take a star of color three and place it into a pocket of color two, using one of the pockets adjacent to the one inside color one.

To complete the octahedron you will need to add the remaining three stars. To help you do this, keep in mind that for every star, two pockets will be inside the pockets of other stars and the other pockets two will contain pockets of other stars. Also, if you look at any corner of a finished model, there are four triangular faces coming together at the corner. Pairs of parallel faces (e.g., pockets) should have the same color. Inside these four faces will be pockets of the same color as the other two faces that touch at the corner. Another point that may help is that two pieces of Origami paper of the same color will make a square in the final figure.
